The TAMS 3 grants for solar offer Irish farmers a powerful opportunity to cut energy costs, improve sustainability, and future-proof their operations. Whether you’re running a dairy, beef, tillage, or mixed farm, installing solar PV has never been more affordable—or more rewarding. Below, we answer the key questions about the grant scheme.

What is the TAMS 3 Solar Capital Investment Scheme (SCIS)?

The Solar Capital Investment Scheme is one of several measures under the TAMS 3 (Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme). It specifically supports farmers who want to invest in solar PV technology. The scheme offers significant financial assistance to make solar power more accessible across Irish agriculture.

How much grant funding is available?

  • Grant rate: Up to 60% of eligible costs
  • Maximum grant: €90,000 per holding under the solar scheme
  • Maximum system size: 62kWp of solar PV is eligible for support

This means farmers can install large-scale systems that make a real dent in rising energy bills—all with the majority of the costs covered.

What equipment is covered by the grant?

The following are considered eligible costs:

  • Solar PV panels
  • Inverters
  • Controllers
  • Cabling
  • Isolation switches

Battery storage systems are also supported, but with a limit: only up to 50% of the installed solar PV capacity.

Who can apply?

Most farmers are eligible to apply. Importantly, if you’ve already received solar PV grant support under TAMS 2, you can still reapply under TAMS 3.

How do I apply for the TAMS 3 grant?

Applications must be submitted through your Agfood account at www.agfood.ie. Tranches (application rounds) are opened periodically. The first tranche closed on 16 June 2024, and new ones continue to open—so there’s still time to take part.

How is the grant amount calculated?

The Department of Agriculture uses reference costs for solar PV installations. If your quote exceeds these costs, you may not receive grant aid on the full amount. That’s why it’s important to work with a reputable installer like Solgrid who understands how to design systems that maximise your grant while staying within reference pricing.

Why should I invest in solar now?

Between the 60% grant support, long-term energy savings, and increasing focus on carbon reduction in Irish farming, the time to invest is now. With energy bills continuing to rise, solar power provides a reliable, clean and cost-effective solution.

By acting today, you not only lower your running costs—you take a positive step toward a more sustainable farming future.
